Mousa Dembele: A guy who is way too underrated

In the post Kante era, defensive midfielders are appreciated than they were used to be. Even before Kante, we had excellent midfielders. Are you thinking of Sergio Busquets? Without a doubt, he is the best in what he does. Then there is this guy who is not appreciated or celebrated as he deserves. He is a warrior and has been guarding the Spurs midfield for so long now. Yes, he is Mousa Dembele.

Mousa Dembele is the accurate definition of how underrated a footballer can ever be. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in the 2012/13 season and has been omnipresent ever since. After joining for a fee of £15 million, Dembele has made over 243 appearances, scoring 12 and assisting 12 in the process. The fact is, he is not the midfielder who scores goals for the team. Dembele is the player who does something more important than that.

He boasts an excellent tackle success percentage of 81% and averages 2.26 tackles per game. Mousa Dembele recovers the ball 5.39 times per game and wins 6.4 duals per game. Couple this with his excellent dribbling skills. This makes him a unique breed.  He controls the midfield in a perfect manner and has that eye for that pass.

The sad fact is, he is not celebrated as he should be. Even at his own club, we will doubt whether he is appreciated as he should be. The reason for us to think so is that he is approaching the final six months of his current contract. Despite 31, he is an excellent player still in his prime. Any top team will like to have him in their roster.

A piece of advice for Tottenham

Hand Dembele the contract he deserves and enjoy him while you can. Even if Spurs decide to let him, it won’t be difficult for him to find any suitors.
