Glenn Phillips ton goes in vain as St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chased down 192 with a six in the penultimate ball to keep their CPL 18 dreams going. They will now meet Trinbago Knight Riders in Qualifier 2. Glenn Phillips smashed 63 balls 103 which helped Tallawahs post 191/5 before Devcich’s half-century and a cameo from Ben Cutting took Patriots over the finishing line.
Having lost the toss and asked to bat first, JT was in a much a better position to post more than 200 on board. Their middle order couldn’t contribute much – only Ross Taylor managed to score above 30. Devcich fell on the last ball of the innings but had ensured that his bowlers had a decent total to defend.
Patriots started the chase well, though they managed only 62 in 9 overs with just one wicket down. They already laid the platform for catching up with the required rate with Gayle still at the crease. Ish Sodhi’s introduction to bowling saw a quick couple of wickets which left Patriots 63/3 in 10 overs.
Devcich and Fabien Allen managed to put a 56 run partnership before Sodhi struck again. JT managed to get two wickets in 16th over where Thomas bowled King and Devcich also got out after scoring 23 balls 50. The game was much in the hands of Patriots with 33 required. Thomas removed dangerous Lewis in the 19th over leaving Patriots to get 15 of the last over of the game.
With Carlos Brathwaite on strike, it wasn’t impossible. Rovman Powell started the final over with a dot ball but followed by a six from Brathwaite. Russel took a stunning catch to remove Brathwaite in the very next ball. However, Powell couldn’t hold his nerve as bowled four wides in the over which saw Ben cutting smashing a six over deep mid wicket to take Patriots over the line.
Patriots will take on Trinbago Knight Riders day after tomorrow for a spot in CPL 18 Final.
