First real upset in this year’s unusual U.S Open comes in women’s draw. Number one seed Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova crashed out of the tournament after losing to French youngster Caroline Garcia in the second round. It was a really commanding performance from 32nd seeded French star, she dominated the number one seed in the first set which she won 6-1.
Garcia broke Karolina more than once in the first set. In the second set number one seed trying to make her come back, fought really well but Garcia was not willing to give up. In the deciding tiebreaker, Garcia outplayed Karolina once again and won the match. This is the first time ever she was seeded first in a grand slam stage and really a shocking exit for Karolina.
Day 3 of the US open also witnessed some more upsets. 11th seed Elena Rybakina, 13th seed United State’s Alison Riske, 19th seed Dayana Yastremska all experienced a similar fate as number one seed Karolina.
Meanwhile former champion and 4th seed Naomi Osaka advance to the third round. Japanese player who struggled a little bit in the first round shown really great performance against unseeded Camila Giorgi.
Osaka broke twice in both sets and won the match in straight sets. Score : 6-1, 6-2. Top players include 6th seed Petra Kvitova, 8th seed Petra Martic and former grand slam winner and 17th seed Angelique Kerber also advanced to the third round of the tournament.
