From 2 sets and a break down in the third set, Dominic Thiem of Austria lift the US Open title for the first time in his career. It’s his first-ever Grandslam title, he is the second-ever Austrian to lift a major title. He is also the first-ever Austrian to lift US Open. The second seed beat fifth seed German Alexander Zverev in that epic 5 setter.
Thiem who played his fourth Grandslam final overcomes the first time Grandslam finalist Zverev. 27-year-old Thiem now becomes first-ever Grandslam champion after 2014, he is also the first player to lift a Grandslam outside Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic since 2016.
It was a hard-fought battle. Sascha Zverev surprised Thiem from start, he starts with a break on Thiem’s first serve. At the start, Thiem hit too many double faults and concede more breaks. So Sascha wins the first set 6-2. It was a similar story in the second set too, 23-year-old German catch on the serves of Thiem and break him twice in the set. Thiem then saved 3 set points and broke Zverev for the first time in the match. But Zverev holds the next serve and wins the second set 6-4.
In the third set it’s again a good start for Zverev, he broke Thiem in the second service game of the set and take advantage once again. But the very next serve when Zverev hit double faults Thiem breaks back and levels the match. Thiem once again finds a break in the third set and takes the set 6-4. Thiem was gaining real momentum as the match progressing. Meanwhile, Zverev starts making more and more mistakes. In the fourth Thiem again create more breakpoints, Zverev able to save some of the breakpoints but eventually he was broken and concede the set 6-3. So match into the fifth and final set.
The final set was full of drama, Thiem looks really tired in the set while Zverev was looking really tensed. Thiem finds a break in the first serve of Zverev but the very next serve as a surprise to many Zverev breaks back. Nervous was all around the court, but players hold their serves. But then Zverev wins a break and start serving for the title. Again the mistakes in big moments hit Zverev, he hit double faults and unforced errors once again, so Thiem uses his chance and breaks Sascha back. Thiem also finds a break in the next serve of Zverev because once again he hit double faults in big moments.
So before serving for the match Thiem calls him trainer for some treatment. But like Zverev Thiem also failed to hold the service, with a break Zverev takes the final set to the tiebreaker. This is the first time ever a men’s US Open title decided on a fifth-set tiebreaker. In the final tiebreaker, Zverev’s problem with serves continues. Zverev was able to save 2 championship points in the tiebreaker but he failed to avoid defeat. After 4 hours of hard-fought match Thiem wins the match through the tiebreaker. Thiem becomes the first man to win the US Open after 2 sets down in the open era. Zverev hit massive 15 double faults whole match, it really cost him the title. But the 23 years left the Arthur Ashe stadium with pride. So we finally got a champion outside the big 3, Thiem finally done it in his fourth final. Some accused him as a clay-court specialist but he proved them all wrong. Hope this grand slam title be the first of the many for Thiem.
