More upsets! Kvitova, Martic, Kerber all out while Osaka into last eight

The women’s draw of the US Open saw some more upsets in round of 16 matches yesterday. Sixth seed Czech Republic player Petra Kvitova suffers a really shocking defeat against the unseeded American Shelby Rogers. Even with her 4 breaks against Shelby in the match, Kvitova failed to prevent the defeat. The match saw two tiebreaks in 3 setters. Shelby won the first set and took the advantage in the match but then Kvitova comes back strong and levels the match by winning the second set 6-3. But in the deciding third set, Kvitova again failed to win the tiebreaker and conceded the match.

Shelby will face former champion and fourth seed Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. Osaka reached the last eight of the tournament after beating 14th seed Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. Osaka who is planning to win her second US Open was really great form against Anett. She broke the opponent 3 times in the match and won it with the scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. In this form, Osaka can repeat her 2018 triumph for sure.

Meanwhile, eighth seed Croatian Petra Martic suffered the same fate of Kvitova in the round of 16. She was beaten by the 23rd seed Yulia Putintseva in a 3 setter. Yulia takes advantage of the match after winning the first set 6-3. But Martic comes back really strong in the second set and levels the match after winning the set 6-2. In the deciding final set, Martic put her all effort to win the match but Yulia stood strong and won the set 6-4.

23rd seed Yulia Putintseva will face 28th seed American Jennifer Brady in the quarter-finals. Brady overcame the 17th seed and former champion, Angelique Kerber, in straight sets. Brady really dominated all the way around Kerber in that match. She broke Kerber 4 times in the match and won the match with the scoreline of 6-1, 6-4. The quarterfinal match will be a great opportunity for both Yulia and Brady to reach the semifinals of a grand slam.
