Belgian player Elise Mertens upset second seed American Sofia Kenin in Round of 16 of the US Open. The 16th seed defeated Kenin in straight sets. Mertens who was very impressive from the start of the match hit 7 aces and break serve of Kenin 4 times. Mertens dominated all match against the second seed. She won the match with the scoreline of 6-3, 6-3.
Mertens will face former world number one Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals. Azarenka who gave birth to her baby some months ago comes back to court and won the Southern and Western Open before US Open. Azarenka overcomes the 20th seed Czech Republic international Karolina Muchova. Azarenka won the match after losing the first set 7-5. She won her second and third set with the scoreline of 6-1, 6-4 respectively. Quarterfinal between Mertens and Azarenka will be a hard match to predict.
