In football what does a £100million cash splash bring you? Is it 8 loses from 11 games? Seems like that for Fulham. Things are not all looking good for the London outfit. They sit at the bottom despite the wonderful squad they possess. Despite some earlier promises, Fulham is enduring a tough start to their Premier League life. Where did it go wrong for them?
How did they prepare for the Premier League?
Fulham did some excellent business in the transfer market. They bought in the highly rated Jean Michel Seri as well as Andre Schrulle. They strengthened the goalkeeping department by bringing in Fabri from Beskitas.
Do you know the irony? Fulham did an overhaul in their defense by bringing new faces. Alfie Mawson, Joe Bryan, Maxime Le Marchand, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Calum Chambers all came to strengthen the Fulham defense. Thanks to their contribution, they are the team which conceded most goals this season in the Premier League.
The best move by Fulham was to bring Mitrovic from Newcastle on a permanent basis. He has scored 5 and assisted 1 this season. At least some things are going Fulham’s way.
Where does the problem lie for Fulham?
Along with Wolves, Fulham made a statement with their transfer activity. Despite their spending things aren’t going Fulham’s way at the moment.
Ryan Sessegnon was a player who showed great promise in the beginning. The 18-year-old lad was set to light the Premier League on fire but has failed to do so till now. Due to the arrival of Andre Schrulle, Sessegnon is forced to play deeper and it has not yielded yet. He just scored once and assisted once. His defensive contribution isn’t as impressive either. It is natural for some players to have a hiccup when it comes to the top level. Fulham will really hope Sessegnon to find his feet again.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah hasn’t reached his top gear yet. As a full-back, his attacking contribution has not been top notch. He is doing his best defensively but his teammates haven’t helped him out. He has age by his side and for Fosu-Mensah better days are ahead of him. (Maybe under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford).
Terrible performance at the heart of the defense: Le Marchand and Denis Odoi. They bring a smile to the opposition striker. No matter how bad a striker you are or how many chances you miss, Fulham’s defense will gift you plenty of chances and it is your duty to score.
What next?
Jokanovic should be expecting a sack any time soon if they continue to play like this. It will be harsh to put the entire blame on the manager as he tried his level best to keep them in the game. Fulham have a great squad, a top quality side. They have a quality attacking options in Mitrovic, Schrulle, and Seri. Coming to the full-back department, they are top-notch there as well.
So the problem is with the center-back pairing at the moment. Fulham needs to sort out their issues if they need to stay in the Premier League. The competition is tough and if you want to stay on top, you can’t give space to mistakes.
