Naomi Osaka does it again! She wins her second US Open and third Grandslam in the last 3 years after beating the unseeded former number one Victoria Azarenka. The fourth seed Japanese comes back from losing the first set 6-1 to Azarenka. Meanwhile, Azarenka suffered her third US Open final defeat. The match was a really great one to watch.
It was a disastrous start from Osaka in the first set, she concedes her first serve against Azarenka, then on it was all Vika in the first set. She broke Osaka 2 more times and wins the set 6-1. This momentum was carried by Azarenka to the second set too. She broke Osaka in the second set too. But Osaka breaks back the very next serve and shown she is going to fight. Osaka was able to find her good form from that moment on.
Osaka once again breaks Azarenka and creates a set point with a breakpoint. Azarenka able to save one set point but eventually concede the set 6-3 to Osaka. In a more tensed third set, both players feel the pressure. So when Azarenka made mistakes with her serve Osaka able to break her early in the third set. But Azarenka fights back and created 3 breakpoints in the very next serve. But Osaka not ready to give up, she saved all three break points and holds the serve.
In the next serve, game Azarenka fought really well to stay in the match and saved 4 breakpoints. Then Azarenka shocks Osaka by getting a break in next serve. But Osaka was not giving anything away, she breaks back Azarenka in very next serve and start serving for the championship. Azarenka able to save one championship point but at last Osaka wins it by holding the serve. She won the final set with the scoreline of 6-3.
Even in defeat Azarenka left the court with pride. The final was her first Grandslam final after long 7 years, it was also after being a mother. Meanwhile, Osaka lifts her 3rd Grandslam and second US Open at the age of 22. Osaka also has shown bravery off the court. She sends a very strong message against racial injustice and police brutality against blacks in society.
