This year mothers ruling Newyork! Serena Williams, Tsvetana Pironkova, and Victoria Azarenka all three mothers left in the tournament advances to the quarterfinals of the US Open. The legendary Serena Williams who teaches her 53rd career Grandslam quarterfinals also marked her 100th win at the Iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium. 15th seed Greek Maria Sakkari put a really good fight against Serena. With a single break, Serena wins the first set 6-3 and take advantage of the match.
In the second set, Sakkari fought really well and gets the set into a tiebreaker. Serena fell behind the tiebreaker early on but she was able to come back but it didn’t prevent Sakkari from winning the set. With this momentum, the 15th seed broke Serena’s first serve in the third set but Serena Williams not ready to give up. Third Serena who broke back to back serves of Sakkari and win the set 6-3. Serena who is gunning for her record 24th Grandslam title will face another mother Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarterfinals.
The unseeded Tsvetana Pironkova’s dream run in the US Open is still on. Pironkova was out of the tennis court for the last 3 years after giving birth to his child. She just comes back to this tournament even without much practice matches. In Round of 16, she overcomes French player Alzie Cornet in a three-setter. With a 6-4 scoreline Pironkova won the first set and take advantage of the match.
In the second set Pironkova was so much closer to winning the match but Cornet saved the match point and take the set to a tiebreaker. Pironkova fell behind the tiebreaker early on but she was able to rescue two set points. But she eventually lost the set to the French star. Pironkova comes back in the third set and wins the set with the scoreline of 6-3. In the match, Pironkova conceded 6 breakpoints but she was able to broke Cornet 8 times. Pironkova already upset the likes of Muguruza and Vekic in the tournament. She will try to do the same against Serena in the quarterfinals.
