Top-seeded players including Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini all entered the round last 16 of the US Open. Second seed Danish player Thiem beat former grand slam champion and 31st seed Croatian legend Marin Cilic.
Cilic unable to bring many problems to the second seed, apart from the third set it was all Thiem all match. He won an impressive 87% of the first serve and broke Cilic 5 times in the match. With 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 scoreline it was a really good performance from the Australian Open finalist. Thiem will face 15th seed Canadian youngster Felix Auger Aliassime in the fourth round. Felix reaches the fourth round after beating unseeded French player Corentin Moutet in a really straight forward match. Felix won the match with the scoreline of 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.
Third seed Daniil Medvedev hit 13 aces and broke the opponent’s serve 7 times during the third round. He won the match against unseeded American Jeffrey John Wolf in a really professional way. The Russian dominated throughout the match and won in straight sets with the scoreline of 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. The last year’s finalist looking for his first-ever grand slam will face another unseeded American Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round. Tiafoe reaches the last 16 of the tournament after beating Marton Fucsovics in straight sets with the scoreline of 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
It was not a straight forward victory for fifth seed German Alexander Zverev in the third round. He came back from a set down to win the match against 32nd seed French player Adrian Mannarino. ‘Sasha’ lost the first set tiebreaker able to bring his best tennis from the second set. The problem with his service continued for the German, he hit 11 double faults all match. But he hit 14 aces and broke opponent’s serve 7 times. He won the match with the scoreline of 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. The German will face unseeded Spaniard Alejandro Fokina in the round of 16.
Sixth seed Italian Matteo Berrettini also reaches the last 16 of the tournament. He beat 30th seed Casper Ruud in a pretty straight forward match. The Italian dominated all match won it 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. He broke the opponent 4 times all match and hit 13 aces. Berrettini will face 10th seed Russian youngster Andrey Rublev in the fourth round. Rublev who impressed in the third round beat unneeded Salvatore Caruso in straight sets. Rublev with 2 bagels wins the match 6-0, 6-4, 6-0. With outstanding performance, Rublev hit 17 aces and win the 87% of first serves also broke the opponent 8 times all match. It will be a hell of a match expected between Berrettini vs Rublev in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, eighth seed Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut face the similar fate of fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Unneeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil upset Agut in a marathon five-setter. Score : 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Vasek will face 21st seed Australian Alex De Minaur in the fourth round. Minaur reaches the fourth round after upsetting 11th seed Russian Karen Khachanov. Even conceding a bagel didn’t stop Minaur to win the 5 set marathon. Score : 6-4, 0-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. 12th seed Canadian Denis Shapovalov also reach the last 16 of the tournament. He beat 19th seed American Taylor Fritz in a five-setter with the scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Shapovalov will face 7th seed David Goffin in the fourth round.
