Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, and Tsvetana Pironkova all entered to the last 16 of the US Open. All 3 women who entered into the motherhood phase in the past few years showed the world that they are not done yet. The legendary Serena Williams, who was seeded third in the tournament aiming to win the record Grandslam title at the US Open went past fellow American and 2017 champion Sloane Stephens.
With her daughter and husband at the stands, Serena had to come back from a set down to win the match. 26th seed Stephens win the first set 6-2 after breaking Serena 2 times in the set. But from then on Serena brings incredible tennis to the court. She hit 12 aces during the match and broke Stephens 2 times each in the second and third sets. Serena won the second and third set 6-2, 6-2. With this form, Serena can win her 7th US Open title for sure. Serena will face 15th seed Maria Sakkari in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, it was a straight forward victory for the Southern and Western Masters champion Victoria Azarenka. The player who suffered really bad times on the court delivered a really top quality performance against Iga Swiatek. She was broken 4 times in the match but broke back the opponent 6 times and won the match 6-4, 6-2.
Azarenka will face 20th seed Karolina Muchova in the fourth round of the Open. Meanwhile surprising run of Tsvetana Pironkova continues at the US Open. Pironkova who comes back from a 3-year break from tennis upset 18th seed Croatian Donna Vekic in the third round. Pironkova, who upset Muguruza last round won the match in straight sets. Score: 6-4, 6-1. She converts all of her four break points she got against Vekic. It is really inspiring performances from these three incredible women so far in the tournament.
The second Sofia Kenin also advances to the last 16 of the tournament. Australian Open champion Kenin faced 27th seed Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the third round. Kevin who is in really good form so far in the tournament won the match in straight sets. She claimed the first set after the tiebreak and win the second set 6-3.
It was not a good day for 7th seed fellow American Madison Keys. Keys suffered an injury against french star Alize Cornet in the second set and pulled out from the match when she was a set down. Sofia Kenin will face 16th seed Belgian Elsie Mertens in the round of 16 of the US Open.
