Defending champions Aizawl FC earned their first victory of MPL8 as they rose to see off a valiant challenge from Mizoram Police.
A solitary goal right before halftime from Rochharzela proved to be the difference between the two sides with a 1-0 win for Aizawl FC in a match where the Police team will feel they deserved to go home with more.
F. Lalrinpuia and Lalramtharmawia spurned half chances for Mizoram Police in the first period which was defined mostly Aizawl FC’s control in midfield. The champions themselves created a few openings as the lively Rochharzela looked a threat to the opposition backline.
And it was Rochharzela who struck in stoppage time after a clever movement inside the box ended with a finely executed finish.
The second half saw Mizoram Police come close a couple of times as they searched in vain for an equaliser. Lalfakzuala headed just wide while substitute Malsawmfela was denied only by the heroics of Aizawl FC custodian Lalawmpuia.
Aizawl FC, content with on their lead, had looked happy to sit and hit on the break but Isak Vanlalruatfela almost doubled their tally late on until he was denied by Police keeper Muanawma.
Aizawl FC will now face Chanmari FC on the evening of October 8 while Mizoram Police entertain Ramhlun North FC the next day.
