Mauro Icardi: An underrated “deadly” poacher

What makes a great striker? Is it the number of goals he scores? or is it his involvement in the build-up play? Different people have different views regarding this. Some like Roberto Firmino who can be anywhere in the pitch. Then there are some strikers who know where they need to be. They won’t run or tackle or help their team but they will be there to score crucial goals. One such striker is Mauro Icardi.

When talking about Mauro Icardi despite his personal controversies he is an excellent footballer. He is just 25 (Yes he is!) and he is the ninth most high goal scorer for Inter Milan. How many more are yet to come? He is their captain and if he stays he will be decorated as Zanetti.

The beginning

Many are unaware about the fact that Mauro Icardi was a part of the La Masia academy. After his stint with Barcelona, he joined Sampordia where he kickstarted his career. Icardi later admitted that he never regretted leaving Barcelona.

It was at Inter he developed into a lethal poacher. He didn’t look back since.

Style of play

Mauro Icardi is not that type of player who will keep running around and win back balls. He is the orthodox striker who possesses deadly finishing and excellent positioning.

Firmino will run a long way back to win the ball. Lewandoski is kind of an orthodox striker but he to will track back to win the ball. In the case of Mauro Icardi, he is more close to Berbatov. He will seem lazy but he is a beast at what he does. Score goals. He leads Inter Milan from the front as he has scored 106 goals from 167 games for Inter Milan.

Don’t expect a Firmino or Greizmann from Icardi. Enjoy the old-school style of Mauro Icardi.

Is he underrated?

Without a question he is. Despite his excellent goalscoring record for Inter Milan, he was not included in the Argentina squad for the World Cup in Russia. He had the final laugh as Messi wasn’t enough to take them the whole way.

Mauro Icardi is not celebrated or appreciated as he should be. He has created controversies all throughout his career including his marriage to Wanda Nara (His ex-teammate and Best Friend’s wife). He has agitated many Inter Milan fans as certain chapters of his autobiography hurt many of them. Many wanted him to leave the club and at last, he had to remove that chapter from his book.

Despite everything he is still at Inter and scoring goals. Another team might come poaching for him soon and he might well leave Italy. Chelsea is reported to be interested in him and he will definitely be a great addition to the Blues.

Enjoy Icardi while you can. It’s high time we give him the appreciation he deserves.
